Antonia Prebble
Most of you will recognise Antonia Prebble for playing strong-willed Loretta West on the oh-so-hot Kiwi television show Outrageous Fortune. But this talented 24-year-old has been in New Zealand’s television industry longer than you may think.TV roles and Loretta West
Antonia has been steadily making a name for herself since scoring her first professional acting job on children’s television series, Mirror Mirror 2, at the age of 12.She has since garnered a rather impressive list of TV roles on her resume. This includes a one-year job presenting kid’s programme What Now? and a core role on cult hit show The Tribe. Now, Antonia’s focus has been diverted to Loretta, a role which she has played since filming the first series of Outrageous Fortune in 2005.

Antonia, who is currently living in Auckland, is having a great time playing the feisty young woman. She loves “the fact that she’s got so much scope”.
“[Loretta] can do pretty much anything and you believe it.”

Antonia says, “[Outrageous Fortune is] far more creatively satisfying than other jobs I’ve had. The material is so good, you can really sink your teeth into it, so it’s really rewarding.”

A typical day on the set
That one-hour show you see on the telly each week actually takes a helluva lot of work! For a typical day of filming, Antonia says, “I arrive in the morning around 6:30am, put on my costume for the first scene, get my hair and makeup done (this takes about 30 minutes), then we start filming at 7:30am.”

She adds, “We block the scene, then the lighting and camera department work out their moves etc. and we (the actors) come back on set and shoot the scene. Each scene takes about two hours and we film for 10.45 hours a day.”

Phew. That’s a long day!

Outside Outrageous
What makes this young woman even more impressive is that she can multitask with the best of them. When she’s not dealing with drama on-screen, Antonia is doing an Arts degree part-time.

She actually started out studying it conjoint with law at Victoria University in Wellington, but discovered in the early stages that law wasn’t her calling.

“Originally I wanted to do a double degree, but after a year of law school I found it just wasn’t me,” she says. “I thought continuing with a degree I’d never use wasn’t worth it, no matter how much kudos it would get me. So I decided to just focus on arts.”

Travelling dramas
Between work and uni, Antonia still managed to find the time to travel in late 2007! She travelled to Europe, America and South America with her Outrageous Fortune co-star, Siobhan Marshall (who plays her on-screen sister, Pascalle West). But the trip wasn’t without its own drama!

Antonia says, “We had a car accident in Mexico with Aidee Walker (Draska on Outrageous Fortune). We were fine but potentially could have died.”

What’s next?
Antonia has aspirations to go international at some point and is keen to keep her acting career alive.

She says, “Hopefully it will go on after Outrageous Fortune and also overseas in future. I’d love to be working overseas within the next five years.”

THE EXTRA QUESTIONS…

  • What’s on your MP3/CD player at the moment?
“The Juno soundtrack. I loved the movie and I love the songs.”
  • Tell us three things most people don’t know about you.
“I’ve had four babies on screen. I’m allergic to rabbits. I’m learning to play the guitar.”
  • Any tips for aspiring young Kiwi actresses out there?
“Prepare really well. Know the script back to front, know your emotional journey really well and ask for help! I ask the other actors like Robyn Malcolm for advice all the time. They’re always happy to help thankfully!”
  • Have you had any bizarre encounters with fans/strange fan mail?
“Yes! Just last night I was in a dairy and a guy came in and asked me if I wanted to smoke a joint with him…I declined…”

See Antonia doing her acting thang on the fourth season of Outrageous Fortune which is currently screening on TV3, Tuesdays, 9:30pm!
