Long Cloud Performs Chilling Classic The Crucible

After the celebrated seasons of Spring Awakening, GRIMM and Colony!, fourteen young actors of Long Cloud Youth Theatre present The Crucible by Arthur Miller. The chilling classic of adultery, collective paranoia, retribution and witchcraft will be performed at the Brierley Theatre (Wellington College) from June 26 until June 28.

Based on the true events of the Salem Witch Trials, the play takes place in a small community where every waking hour is expected to be devoted to the service of God. A group of young girls are caught dancing like heathens in the woods leading to signs of ‘The Devils Work’ being spotted. Cries of ‘Witchcraft’ suddenly consume the community as mass hysteria takes hold. One by one the blameless victims are torn from their homes and families, culminating in the hanging of 19 people for the crime of ‘Witchcraft’. Directed by Long Cloud’s Artistic Director Willem Wassenaar, this production of The Crucible is going to be a raw, honest and bare experience allowing the immense cruelty of this play to shine through. When witnessing how these young actors embody the harrowing context of The Crucible, audiences will be forced to question their own relationship to fear in today’s world. ‚The fact is, we behave badly when consumed by fear, and those who would control us are usually successful for a time when they exploit our fear to its fullest. And then eventually, ironically, it is the fear that destroys us,? says Willem Wassenaar.

Long Cloud Youth Theatre, run by Wellington Performing Arts Centre, is a unique training and production company for young people aged 15-21 years. The Company gives young actors the means to enhance their theatrical skills through practical performance experience and the opportunity to work with Wellington’s foremost theatrical directors and tutors. The program is led by award winning teacher and director Willem Wassenaar. Award winning actress and director Sophie Roberts tutors the students throughout the program.

Directed by Willem Wassenaar / Tutored by Sophie Roberts / Starring Ben Crawford, Jack Buchanan, Liffey Jacobson-Wright, Joe Dekkers-Reihana, Nicole Steven, Anna Harcourt, Hayden Frost, Anthony Young, Ali Lai-Carlyle, Alisha Tyson, Felicity Milovanovich, Ngakopa Volkerling, Bea Joblin, Tai Berdinner-Blades.
