Michelle Ang (aka The Tribe’s Tai-San) will be taking on the lead role in Roseanne Liang’s first feature film, titled Girl Meets Boy (it’s the working title so the name may change!).
Girl Meets Boy is “the contemporary story of Chinese New Zealand-born over-achiever Emily Chu, raised to believe she can get anything she puts her mind to. Even if ‘anything’ is at odds with her traditional Hong Kong born parents’ wish for her to become a doctor like her two older sisters. Everything is coming up roses – until she meets James, a European New Zealander, and accidentally falls in love with him. But if her father finds out, she will face disownment”.
Definitely sounds interesting! The press release (dated February) from South Pacific Pictures is below. The film is due to be released in 2011. Michelle Ang has previously worked with Roseanne Liang on the short film Take 3. Michelle is also appearing in the ‘directed by Jodie Foster’ movie The Beaver, it stars Mel Gibson and will be released this year.
With thanks to Ross for the info on Michelle’s new film. Hey if you have any news/cast goss you’d like up, do please e-mail me at clare@tribeheaven.co.uk – thanks! Images from South Pacific Pictures and Outrageous Fortune.
MEDIA RELEASE
FRIDAY FEBRUARY 26, 2010FILMING STARTS ON GIRL MEETS BOY
Shooting begins this Sunday in Auckland on South Pacific Picture’s GIRL MEETS BOY, a romantic comedy/coming-of-age feature film based on the award-winning 2005 documentary Banana in a Nutshell by Roseanne Liang. Liang directs GIRL MEETS BOY, which she co-wrote with Angeline Loo.
Funny, touching and heartfelt, GIRL MEETS BOY is the contemporary story of Chinese New Zealand-born over-achiever Emily Chu, raised to believe she can get anything she puts her mind to. Even if ‘anything’ is at odds with her traditional Hong Kong born parents’ wish for her to become a doctor like her two older sisters. Everything is coming up roses – until she meets James, a European New Zealander, and accidentally falls in love with him. But if her father finds out, she will face disownment.
By the time Emily realises that she’s sacrificing the respect of her family to follow her heart, James, too, has fallen irrevocably in love and there’s nothing for it but to try and keep their relationship a secret. Happy endings don’t come easy, if at all, but that doesn’t mean they don’t happen. But for Emily to get one, she needs to show James and her family that she has learned a lesson about the selflessness of love.

Hmm, are you sure that’s Michelle Ang in the pic? She looks kinda wrinkly? Or is her makeup done to make her look older?
Sounds really cool. A leading role and all that. I hope the film will be good, I really wish Michelle all the success.
I like the new pic! It definitely is her lol. I don’t the pic of Michelle by herself, she looks older.
But I have to say Michelle and the guy, Matt Whelan look cute! Look at their hands in the pic and the way they’re sitting, they look sweet! If the chemistry between them in the film is as good as it is in the pic it should make for a good movie.
All the best to Michelle :)
yeah, its definetly Michelle, just imagine her with some tribe makeup on… the one with her by herself doesn’t look like her coz its from a funny angle i think, but i immeaditly saw Tai-san when i saw the photo with her and Matt Whelan… looks cool and i cant wait to see Michelle in other things :-)
Hey shabbs, could you please look at the above comment… i dont think its very suitable for the website and is offensive to Michelle. I know everyone is allowed to put out their own opinion, but it is a really horrible comment and as a regular viewer on the site and a huge tribe fan, it is quite hurtful and i think other fans would think the same. Is there any way it could be removed?? :-)
Wow Brianna well spotted, I’ve removed.
What a loser posting such crap here. Oh well.
Thanks heaps Shabbs, no probs, love the site, wouldn’t know what i’d do without it… and i think so many other tribe fans would think the same :-)
i think michelle is really pretty and i loved her in the tribe. wishing her all the best for future films:)
