Fleur Saville in Tangiwai

Tangiwai starring Fleur Saville

Fleur Saville stars in Tangiwai
Following her departure from Shortland Street, the gorgeous Fleur Saville (Libby Jefferies/Ruby in The Tribe) has dyed her blonde locks to brunette for her role as Eva Peacocke in the TVNZ tele-feature movie Tangiwai.

Tangiwai, produced by Lippy Pictures, is a love story set in 1953 between the lovers Bob Blair and Nerissa Love. Their love story is set against a real life train crash that happened in the New Zealand Tangiwai region, the 1953 Tangiwai Railway Disaster. The train crashed on 24th December, Christmas Eve, 1953.

The film was shot in Wellington during November/December 2010 and is set to be shown this year on TVNZ. You can read more about the production below. Just got to add, were loving Fleur’s look!

Here an interesting piece of Tribe related trivia: Paula Boock is a producer and writer for productions at Lippy Pictures who made Tangiwai. Her name may seem familiar as she was also the writer of the first The Tribe novel ‘Power & Chaos‘.

From Lippy Pictures:

TANGIWAI

A love story. A tragedy. Acts of extraordinary heroism. A disaster. A great historical sporting moment. Friendship. Tapu. Nationhood. TANGIWAI is a big story with all the elements of a heart-wrenching and heart-warming telefeature.

It’s 1953. Bob Blair and 19 year old Nerissa Love are deeply in love. Their love story alone is the stuff of movies but what makes Bob and Nerissa’s story one of legends is that catastrophic events will cause their private love story to play out its final scene on an unlikely public stage.

While Bob goes off to play cricket for his country in South Africa, Nerissa makes a fateful decision to travel to Auckland to be with her friend for Christmas. While Bob smashes wickets in Johannesburg, the train Nerissa is on heads straight for a bridge that spans the Whangaehu River – a place better known as Tangiwai – “River of Tears”.

When news of the train crash and Nerissa’s death – along with 150 Xmas travellers – reaches the cricket team in South Africa, Bob is devastated. But what follows is an act of courage and defiance that stands as one of our most dramatic moments in sporting history. Bob Blair’s actions on the cricket field – batting through tears to try and save his battered team – reflect the heroism being played out back home as the nation faces its worst ever disaster.

TANGIWAI explores a great tragedy through the eyes of two young people who embody all the hope of the post-war generation, a generation who were desperate to forge a new, independent path for themselves.

This is a heart-wrenching and powerful story which though re-telling a moment in NZ’s history will resonate with all viewers internationally.

Tangiwai is being made by Lippy Pictures Ltd, a Wellington based company whose previous feature Until Proven Innocent won a number of awards including Best Drama at the Qantas Film and Television Awards 2009. On this project Lippy Pictures is working with Oscar winning (Sir) Richard Taylor and the internationally famous Weta Workshop. Directed by Charlie Haskell, Designed by John Harding,

Tangiwai is a feature length drama for TVNZ’s prestigious Sunday Night Drama slot. Presently in pre-production, Tangiwai will be shot in Wellington from 7th Nov – 17 December 2010.
