Our costume designer, Nicola Newman, for her grace and professionalism. My mum and dad, who are so wise and funny and cute. My husband-to-be, who has such remarkable drive and enthusiasm. Older actresses who haven’t messed with their faces and get more powerful on and off the screen and stage: Helen Mirren, Judi Dench, Meryl Streep.

Vagina Monologues : In Review

The Vagina Monologues : Auckland 2010 : Featuring - Fleur Saville, Beth Allen and Antonia Prebble

There are lovely reviews on 3news.co.nz and Stuff.co.nz on The Vagina Monologues, in particular, they mention both Beth Allen’s and Antonia Prebble’s performance in the production.

Here’s what 3news.co.nz said about Antonia Prebble:

With sass and spunk Antonia Prebble delivered a great monologue on the angry vagina. She listed her character’s reasons and summed up that a more vagina-friendly world would eliminate tampons, g-strings and the chilling unpleasantness of visits to the gynaecologist.

And on Beth Allen:

Beth Allen deftly portrayed pain, confusion and panic during one of her monologues when her character feared she’d lost her clitoris. There was a happy ending to the tale however and again Allen captured the elation and joy of her character’s freedom and empowerment.

Gabrielle Henderson, Jodie Rimmer and Rachel Nash are also mentioned in the review as they feature in the same ‘shift’ as Beth and Antonia in The Vagina Monologues.

The Stuff.co.nz review said the following: “Last night I was lucky enough to stumble upon Brooke from Shortland Street (Beth Allen) with the bonus of Loretta from Outrageous Fortune (Antonia Prebble). Both were very engaging, as were the other ladies who joined them – Gabrielle Henderson, Rachel Nash and Jodie Rimmer”.

With thanks to Jess of AntoniaPrebble.com for the info and to BethAllen.Webs.

Beth Allen : On The Vagina Monologues

Beth Allen on The Vagina Monologues

Beth Allen (Shortland Streets Brooke Freeman/Tribe’s Amber) has given an insight to her opening night of The Vagina Monologues on Facebook:

Had my opening night for The Vagina Monologues last night, and it was AWESOME. Lots of lovely women in the audience who were so kind to us all on stage. After hours (and hours) of legwork, I was reminded of why we put this production together; giving myself (and others) the thrill of being on stage! It’s addictive. :) …

2010 Qantas Award Nominations…

Qantas Film and Television Awards - New Zealand 2010

The Qantas Film & Television Awards are one of the biggest ceremonies honouring the New Zealand film industry. This year from The Tribe cast alumni we follow Miriama Smith and Beth Allen have both received nominations.

Miriama Smith Miriama Smith
Miriama has been nominated for ‘Best Performance by a Supporting Actress’ for her role as Grace Gallagher in Kaitangata Twitch, which was broadcast on Maori TV.
I’m suprised she did not receive a nomination for her role in the controversial TV movie Stolen : The Baby Kahu Story, which she was fantastic in, but I’m guessing it’s because it was broadcast after/near the deadline of nomination dates.

Beth Allen
Beth Allen Beth has received a nomination in the ‘New Idea People’s Choice’ category. The winner of this award will be chosen by the people of New Zealand. Beth has been nominated for her role as Dr. Brooke Freeman in Shortland Street.
If you live in New Zealand please do vote for Beth by texting A to 4369 (texts cost 20 cents each). That’s A for Awesome Allen! Beth is up against Robyn Malcolm in this category. Robyn Malcolm is fabulous but we don’t want Lex’s bootcamp leader Ma’am to win, we want Beth to win! ;D

The winners will be announced at the award ceremony at the Civic Theatre in Auckland on Saturday 18 September. We wish them both the best of luck. Well whoever wins, no matter what, it all comes down to what you wear on the night. Choose those frocks wisely ladies! Continue reading…

Beth Allen : Tribal Influences

Beth Allen - The Tribe's Amber - Shortland Streets Brooke Freeman

Many of us first came across Beth Allen as Amber in The Tribe. Our fondness of The Tribe, the storylines, tribal gear and the actors may have had some New Zealanders scratching their head wondering ‘What’s with all this Tribe malarky?’ – the series never caught on in it’s homeland.

To those in the know The Tribe was a cult TV series filmed in Wellington, New Zealand, and spanned a total of five seasons accumulating a total of 260 episodes. It had quiet a following in Europe, USA and currently in Australia.

In an interview with Nicola Russell, for The Sunday News, Beth talks about what attracted her to the up-coming theatre production The Vagina Monologues (which Beth is producing as well starring in), filming her current role as Dr. Brooke Freeman in Shortland Street and also talks about The Tribe…

Here’s some quotes from Beth Allen on The Tribe:
“It did really well. It’s inexplicable to me, because to me it was fine but it wasn’t an Emmy award-winning drama but it seemed to have found a little niche in its audiences and internationally it’s still huge.”

“They are the most dedicated fans. And it went on for years, we shot the first series and I thought, `well, that’s that’ and we shot it for another four years.”

Shortland Street publicist Rachael Keereweer is also quoted as saying, “I don’t know how they figure it out but the minute anyone from The Tribe turns up on Shortland Street they’ll email and ask for pictures”. (Lol!)

There are a few more Tribe references in the article by Nicola Russell. Read the full article here or below. More information on Beth Allen can be found on her official Facebook page and also at the fansite BethAllen.Webs.

The Vagina Monologues will be run at the Basement Theatre in Auckland, August 25th – September 11th 2010. To book tickets click here.
