Major congrats to Michelle Ang who won the AFTA (Aotearoa Film and Television Award) for ‘Best Lead Actress in a Feature Film’ for her role as Emily in My Wedding And Other Secrets.
The 2011 AFTA’s, previously known as the Qantas Film & Television Award, was held at the Viaduct Events Centre on November 12, 2011 in Auckland, New Zealand.
I am not 100% certain if Michelle Ang was in attendance to pick up the award herself as I can’t seem to find any photos of her at the event. If you know if she was there or found pics, give us a shout please :)
My Wedding And Other Secrets also won the Best Screenplay for a Feature Film, awarded to Roseanne Liang & Angeline Loo. Another notable, Tribe related win, was Kaitangata Twitch which won the Best Children’s/Youth Programme award. The series starred Miriama Smith.

Yay, with thanks to Marie, here’s some pics of the awesome Michelle Ang in movie The Beaver:
Here’s a bit about Michelle’s appearance in the film by Marie:
In the movie Michelle appears briefly in a scene at the start where Jodie Foster’s character Meredith Black is working at home [Jodie also directed the film]. Michelle Ang is shown on Meredith’s computer screen as a Japanese translator. We can’t hear what she says as there is a voice over in the scene talking about Meredith’s dedication to her job working on Japanese rollercoasters/theme park. Michelle’s appearance is one of those blink and you’ll miss it moments! She is also uncredited at the end of the movie. But it was great to see her and the film is pretty good too if you like character movies/family dramas. Mel Gibson plays Walter Black, the lead role, in the movie.
The Beaver is out now on DVD in America, click here to check it out. It is released in Germany (Der Biber) on October 6th (info here) and in the UK on October 10th (info here).
Michelle Ang has been filming a ‘TV-movie’ pilot for an MTV series, entitled Underemployed.
She and her fellow Underemployed cast members (Sarah Habel, Jared Kusnitz and Inbar Lavi) headed over to the premiere night of MTV’s Teen Wolf series on May 25, 2011 in Los Angeles, California.
Check out a mini interview with the cast below:

Photos of Michelle, and the Underemployed gang, from the premiere can be seen on Zimbio.
Michelle Ang fans in the UK, and in particular London, your prayers have been answered!
As part of The New Zealand Film Festival 2011 there will be a showing of the recent Roseanne Liang movie My Wedding And Other Secrets and Take 3, which both feature Michelle Ang in lead/co-lead roles. The double bill will play at 6pm on July 2nd 2011 at the Barbican, for booking details click here.
- Meanwhile over on New Zealand website 24/7 Girl their is an interview with Michelle Ang talking about acting to Sarah Illingworth, a friend and fellow Kiwi who’s living and working in America. Key quote from Michelle:
“I am currently in development on a one-woman theatre show too”.
Back to the Barbican… The New Zealand Film Festival is supported by the New Zealand High Commission, the New Zealand Film Commission, New Zealand’s Ministry for Culture and Heritage and NZ-UK The Link Foundation.
Want more Tribe links with the festival? Also showing will be the movie Boy, introduced by Taika Waititi and Eagle vs. Shark which will have a Q&A with Taika Waititi it also features Jermaine Clement in the film. Jermaine and Taika both appeared in The Tribe – click here for more info on that appearance. (Please note: Taika Waititi attending the festival has not been 100% confirmed yet).

Check out this melodic music video by Lips, for the single One Not Two. Michelle Ang appears in the music video as a friend of, the uhm, Lips… I think she’s playing Josie. Michelle also directed the video!

I love it, it’s quirky. The intimate video was filmed in New York and features friends of Lips and Michelle.

Tom Cardy from New Zealand newspaper The Dominion Post did a feature article on actress Michelle Ang. In the article Michelle spoke about working with Jodie Foster on the movie The Beaver, Mel Gibson, her character in Big Mommas 3, her current movie My Wedding And Other Secrets as well visiting family and friends while in New Zealand.
Click here to read the article online.
On The Beaver Michelle said the following, she also talked about her tattoo that is on her wrist:
“I’ve never been the great headline [name], but I’ve managed to slide in between lots of great projects. I hope it comes out. Mel Gibson is not really the most popular guy in the world right now, but his character in The Beaver would be publicly redeeming. It could have been his comeback.
“I’m only a tiny, little part in it, but the most amazing thing was getting directed by Jodi Foster. She knew heaps about New Zealand. She heard that I had a tattoo on my wrist that was a New Zealand tattoo. She came down and wanted to look at it, because she knew about the Maori culture of tattoo.” Continue reading…
