Michelle Ang : Attends Chinese Film Festival

Roseanne Liang with actors Cheng Pei Pei and Michelle Ang  in China Michelle Ang joined My Wedding And Other Secrets director Roseanne Liang and fellow cast member Cheng Pei Pei at the 20th Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival in China. The movie which stars Michelle Ang and Matt Whelan was a finalist in the Chinese ‘Oscars’.

Michelle Nominated For Best Actress Award…
In other news the film is nominated for five awards in the Aotearoa Film and Television Awards (AFTAs); Michelle Ang is nominated in the Best Lead Actress in a Feature Film, best of luck to Michelle. The other awards the film is up for are: Best Feature Film, Best Director in a Feature Film (Roseanne Liang), Best Lead Actor in a Feature Film (Matt Whelan) and Best Screenplay for a Feature Film (Roseanne Liang & Angeline Loo).

The awards ceremony will take place on 12th November.

Michelle Ang fans in the UK, and in particular London, your prayers have been answered!

As part of The New Zealand Film Festival 2011 there will be a showing of the recent Roseanne Liang movie My Wedding And Other Secrets and Take 3, which both feature Michelle Ang in lead/co-lead roles. The double bill will play at 6pm on July 2nd 2011 at the Barbican, for booking details click here.

- Meanwhile over on New Zealand website 24/7 Girl their is an interview with Michelle Ang talking about acting to Sarah Illingworth, a friend and fellow Kiwi who’s living and working in America. Key quote from Michelle:

“I am currently in development on a one-woman theatre show too”.

Back to the Barbican… The New Zealand Film Festival is supported by the New Zealand High Commission, the New Zealand Film Commission, New Zealand’s Ministry for Culture and Heritage and NZ-UK The Link Foundation.

Want more Tribe links with the festival? Also showing will be the movie Boy, introduced by Taika Waititi and Eagle vs. Shark which will have a Q&A with Taika Waititi it also features Jermaine Clement in the film. Jermaine and Taika both appeared in The Tribe – click here for more info on that appearance. (Please note: Taika Waititi attending the festival has not been 100% confirmed yet).

Sione’s Wedding (aka Samoan Wedding) will also play in London. Amongst the cast Fleur Saville (Ruby from The Tribe) and Kelson Henderson (Pony Joe in series 3 of The Tribe) have an appearance in the film.

These are definitely some of the best titles in New Zealand cinema.

Michelle Ang and Matt Whelan in My Wedding And Other Secrets Remember news about the movie Girl Meets Boy? It stars Michelle Ang (formerly The Tribe’s Tai-San) in the lead role. Well, the movie has been renamed to My Wedding And Other Secrets.

Described as: “A Romeo and Juliet story with a Kiwi-Asian twist, My Wedding and Other Secrets is a romantic comedy in which a young couple, James (Matt Whelan) and Emily (Michelle Ang), have to overcome the expectations of Emily’s parents in order to bring happiness to everyone.”

The movie has been picked up by Sony Pictures who will distribute the film, nationwide, in New Zealand with makers South Pacific Pictures. The film is set for release on Thursday March 17th 2011. The news comes via Flicks.co.nz (pasted below).

Girl Meets Boy by Roseanne Liang - stars Michelle Ang

Michelle Ang (aka The Tribe’s Tai-San) will be taking on the lead role in Roseanne Liang’s first feature film, titled Girl Meets Boy (it’s the working title so the name may change!).

Matt Whelan and Michelle Ang Girl Meets Boy is “the contemporary story of Chinese New Zealand-born over-achiever Emily Chu, raised to believe she can get anything she puts her mind to. Even if ‘anything’ is at odds with her traditional Hong Kong born parents’ wish for her to become a doctor like her two older sisters. Everything is coming up roses – until she meets James, a European New Zealander, and accidentally falls in love with him. But if her father finds out, she will face disownment”.

Michelle Ang in Girl Meets Boy Definitely sounds interesting! The press release (dated February) from South Pacific Pictures is below. The film is due to be released in 2011. Michelle Ang has previously worked with Roseanne Liang on the short film Take 3. Michelle is also appearing in the ‘directed by Jodie Foster’ movie The Beaver, it stars Mel Gibson and will be released this year.

According to this article here the short film won the Meeting Point Audience Award for Best Foreign Short, the top prize in this section. The Meeting Point Audience Award prize is € 5000. Nice!
